What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
One of my greatest talents would have to be doing the hurdles in Track and Field. The hurdles are an object that is put on the course where you have to jump over them. I discovered that I was really good at this when I decided to join Track and Field last year. I decided to just jump over them for fun but after a while I realized that I could be really good at these in the races. After talking about it with my coaches they both agreed to let my try them out. I got First place the first time I tried it which made me really happy overall. I used to jump over trash cans for practice because the school didn’t have hurdles to jump over so for practice I would line up trash can and have to pretend that they were hurdles. Most races I would get good times but they weren’t as good as I the others because they had advantages that I did not have which was a Track and Field and some hurdles to practice with. So at the end of my first season I did well but not as good as I know I could have gotten. This year though I luckily have been given some hurdles to jump over which only means that I can get better which I have been and not only that but it has been helping me develop my technique even more than last year. Now that I have these hurdles I see a significant change in my time during races which is what I like to see. I feel that I am only getting better and that soon I will to the point where I can do the hurdles without having a struggles doing it and hopefully qualifying for valley. I have taken the opportunities to learn from other coaches that coach hurdle in order to get better as well. At the end though that is my greatest talent and it is only getting better because I don’t give up and I always strive to be good.
Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
Throughout my years of education I have faced many educational barriers that I had to strive to overcome them and succeeded in doing so. One of my educational barriers was the lack of work I would get done home because there wasn’t many resources. I lacked having teacher help and I also lacked the internet access that was needed to get work done because our school now is going into a more technological approach. I remember not getting assignments done because when I got home there was no Wi-Fi for me to do any work. The way I would get my assignments done was by trying to finish them in class as fast as possible or trying to do it in a class that I already finished. I have tried going to other people’s homes to use the Wi-Fi but I get easily distracted so I get no work done at all. Sometimes I would ask my Mom if we could get Wi-Fi but we didn’t have the money for it so that was kind of hard for me because it came to the point where Wi-Fi was a necessity in school and without it you would most likely fail. Luckily at the high school they started providing a program called red zone where students can go and do their homework or help get tutored. I signed up for the program and started staying after school every day which helped because I started to stress about assignments. I would also use this time to go and ask my teachers for help on topics I was struggling on or didn’t understand. In order to overcome this challenge I had to find a bunch of alternatives to meet my goal. Also I had to set goals for myself and try to stay on top of every assignments that was handed to me or else I would face the consequences.
Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
My favorite academic subject is auto because it has always been my interest to work on cars since I was younger. It is also something that I’m interested in doing after high school. Being able to have Auto class as an academic subject has been real nice. I hate being stuck behind a desk like the rest of these other classes that we have to take. Learning how to work on cars has only made me want to get a job as a mechanic even more because I have great interest for it. I feel that I would enjoy a job in the auto field because I don’t see it as a job but as a hobby which is how I feel a job should be. My Teacher Mr. Boydstun has taught me a lot of what I know about automotive things. He was one of my most favorite teachers in my high school years because he taught my favorite subject. I believe because of this subject I have been able to take care of my car and also help others with their cars. I also believe that without this subject in school I would not be as excited about going to school as I am when I know that I have auto. I believe that people should take auto for a class because it not only teaches you how to work on cars but it also help you work on yourself like for example, If you are doing an engine rebuild and your very impatient then you would hate it but if you keep doing things that take a long time then you will have more patients for other things. Auto can teach you a lot of life lessons and that it is why I find it so interesting than all the other subjects that are provided at school.
What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
One of the things that I have done to make my community a better place was by helping out people that need their cars fixed for free. I remember my Grandma would tell everyone to just tell her and I would be on my way over to help. I remember I help this man with his car because he said he had broken something because the car would misfire I knew at that moment one of his spark plugs were messed up so I took a look and found out I was right and I just took out the spark plug and put in a brand new one and just like that the car started much better without the sound of a misfire. The man offered me money to pay for my service but I told him that it was all good and that I was happy to have done it for free. He said thank you and if I needed anything just to ask him. After that I feel that is when my interest for cars started to really increase and also to help others with their cars if I had the resource to fix it. I then would ask people if they needed help with their cars and I would do it for free. The next person I helped was a friend of my Grandma’s. She needed an oil change and this was the first time I had to change someone’s oil on their car. So I looked up everything to do it and after a while I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it but I decided to do it anyways. I remember I had burned myself and still have the mark. At the end I actually changed it correctly I was so surprised because I did not expect to have done it right. Those were two of the many things I have done for my community.
